Golgotha

The hill referred to, which means "place of the skull"
Identified in 1881 as the probable place of Jesus crucifixion
because of a skull image naturally etched in the crevice of this hill.

Catholics and Orthodox put the site of the crucifixion
at the Holy Sepulcher church in the Old City.
But the Garden Tomb area, adjacent to Golgotha,
is considered by most the authentic burial site of Christ.

A bus station servicing east Jerusalem
was built in front of Golgotha in 1953
Since then, it has been renovated twice.
Causing the loose rock on the face to slip away,
speeding up the erosion of the eye sockets.

Golgotha

The location of the holy site and the bus station
mirrors the irony of Jerusalem's caricature.

Considered by some Christians one of the holiest sites in Israel,
the skull lies on the side of a hill which hosts a Muslim cemetery on top.
The adjacent Garden Tomb winds its way around the side
of the hill putting this quiet garden in the middle
of a market area outside the Old City's Damascus Gate.
