Tomb of Rachel

About 1 mile North of Bethlehem and 4 miles from Jerusalem.

Rachel, the beloved wife of the third Patriarch, Jacob,
died in childbirth on the way to Hebron returning to his family's home:

Judaism's third-holiest site,
The scene of prayer and pilgrimage for over three thousand years.

Sir Moses Montifeori renovated the Tomb in 1841
Added on an anteroom and enclosed the dome over the grave marker.
Since 1948 Muslims have created their own cemetery
surrounding  the building on three sides.

Muslims claim that the Tomb is one of their burial plots
and contains a Muslim notable rather than Rachel.
